End clap for the Oculus Rift S, permanently withdrawn from sale

Oculus Rift Shutdown

After two years of loyal service, Oculus has decided to shut down the lenses of its Rift S VR headset for good .

A fate that had fallen to him since last year already, when the Oculus Quest 2 was about to trigger a real tidal wave in the world of virtual reality. Now, when we go to the Oculus site, we can notice that the Oculus Rift S is conspicuous by its absence, a sign that the brand is definitely relegating this headset to the past.

Swan song for Oculus’ latest PC VR headset

If the Oculus Rift S is no longer officially for sale on the brand’s website, it is still possible to find it from sworn dealers who still have it in stock. But, as a whole, the last heir of the line of VR headsets for PC Oculus Rift is passing away without leaving any offspring, after five years of existence.

As a reminder, the Oculus Rift first of the name started its marketing in 2016 at the price of 399 euros. The Rift S, made by Lenovo, came to replace it in 2019, but had not received as much love as the first version of the Oculus Quest , released the same year.

The following year, the collection was embellished with a certain particularly powerful headphone for its entry price, the Quest 2, whose resounding success ended up sounding the death knell for its sister range.

The darling of Facebook overshadowed his elder

Sold via an entry ticket priced at 299 euros and requiring a mandatory Facebook account to operate, the Oculus Quest 2 has caused a real shock in the small market for VR headsets. Just six months after its release, it has accomplished the feat of selling better than all previous Facebook VR headsets combined.

No surprise therefore that Mark Zuckerberg’s company has decided to put all its virtual eggs in one basket and abandon the exclusively PC headset that was the Rift S. A choice that has apparently paid off, because the Oculus Quest 2 notably represents 60% of VR headsets used on SteamVR.

For Facebook executives, the Oculus Quest 2 could be well on its way to becoming the first “ mainstream ” VR headset , and its employees in the VR / AR department are continually working to improve it. Support for 120 Hz and wireless PC mode are all examples of this, while the Oculus Quest 3 and 4 are already in the pipeline.

Nevertheless, the quest is over for good for the Oculus Rift range, with the disappearance of the body and much of the Rift S, a small VR headset that left too soon.
